Ran Holtzman

I seek fundamental understanding of multiphase and reactive fluid flow, with emphasis on how pore-scale processes affect the hydrogeological response at larger scales. I combine simulations, controlled micromodel experiments and theory to predict the emergence of preferential pathways and flow instabilities caused by fluid-fluid or fluid-solid interactions, such as capillary and wettability effects, and chemo-mechanical deformation. Overall, my research provides fundamental understanding of mechanisms which are key in processes ranging from microfluidics to subsurface remediation, energy recovery and carbon geosequestration, with important implications on the global water and carbon cycles.
